Definition
Query fan-out is when an AI engine expands a single user question into several related searches, then synthesizes one answer from the results it retrieves.
Rather than running the exact query a user typed, many AI systems generate a set of sub-queries that cover the intent from different angles, retrieve sources for each, and combine what they find into a single response. The user sees one answer built from many hidden searches.
This changes optimization. A firm may never rank for the literal question asked, yet still be surfaced because it matches one of the fanned-out sub-queries. Covering the surrounding questions and adjacent phrasings, not just a single target term, widens the chances of being retrieved.
Fan-out also explains why AI answers can pull in sources that a plain keyword search would never return.
