Definition
AI Overviews is Google's AI-generated answer box that appears above traditional results and summarizes an answer with links to supporting sources.
When Google decides a query is suited to a generated summary, it composes an answer from multiple web sources and shows it at the top of the results page, with citations to the pages it drew on. It sits above the familiar list of organic links.
Because the overview draws on retrieved, cited sources, appearing in it depends on being one of the pages Google selects and trusts for that query. The sources shown are not always the top-ranked organic results, so classic ranking and overview inclusion can differ.
For firms, AI Overviews changes what a top position is worth: a prospect may read the summary and its cited firms without scrolling to the traditional results at all.
